Sumer (Sumerian: 𒆠𒂗𒂠 ki-en-ĝir15 "Land of the Lords of Brightness", Akkadian: Šumeru; possibly Biblical Shinar) (sometimes spelled "Sumar") was a civilization and historical region in southern Iraq (Mesopotamia). It is the earliest known civilization in the world and is known as the Cradle of Civilization. The Sumerian civilization spanned over three-thousand years and began with the first settlement of Eridu in the Ubaid period (mid 6th millennium BC) through the Uruk period (4th millennium BC) and the Dynastic periods (3rd millennium BC) until the rise of Babylonia in the early 2nd millennium BC. Sumer was the birthplace of writing, the wheel, agriculture, the arch, the plow, irrigation and many other things. The term "Sumerian" (or "Sumarian", using the alternate spelling) applies to all speakers of the Sumerian language.

The cities of Sumer were the first to practice intensive, year-round agriculture, (from ca. 5300 BC). By 5000 BC the Sumerians had developed core agricultural techniques including large-scale intensive cultivation of land, mono-cropping, organized irrigation, and the use of a specialized labour force, particularly along the waterway now known as the Shatt al-Arab, from its Persian Gulf delta to the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates. The surplus of storable food created by this economy allowed the population to settle in one place instead of migrating after crops and grazing land. It also allowed for a much greater population density, and in turn required an extensive labor force and division of labor. This organization led to the development of writing (ca. 3500 BC).

How did the Sumerians see their rivers in a religious sense?
Q. Explain how Sumerians saw their unpredictable nature of the rivers surrounding them in a religious sense. How did this concept give order to the Sumerian society?

A. The entire economy of their civilization depended on the Euphrates River. Thats where the got there food from...water to irrigate their plants...and the navigation of that river and its tributaries made them a prosperous society with many established trade routs. Without the river they would perish. That's why they looked at the river in a religious sense as a universal giver and when there were storms and floods the river became a taker of life and land. They prayed to the river Gods to keep them safe and prosperous.

How did the Sumerians have knowledge of all the planets in our solar system?
Q. Thousands of years before we knew the world was round, and the sun moved around us. Still even Saturn. How did they know about it? How could they calculate something they were un-aware? No comprede. Lots of good info here. Thanks for the answers. Lots of good info here. Thanks for the answers.

A. The planets out to Saturn are obvious, even in light polluted skies. They were unusual because, unlike other 'stars', they move. The Sun and the Moon also "move" with respect to the 'fixed stars', and were considered planets. The Sun is kind of a special case - because when it's up, it's hard to tell where it is with respect to the stars, because you can't see the stars when it's up. But after a few months, it's pretty obvious. Still, it's pretty clever that they could tell what constellation it's in. Many people thought the world was round thousands of years ago. Every time you see a lunar eclipse, where the Earth's shadow crosses the Moon, the shadow is round. These are fairly common, and people saw many of them, and at different… [cont.]
