From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Ecology (from Greek: οἶκος, "house" ; -λογία, "study of") is the interdisciplinary scientific study of the interactions between organisms and the interactions of these organisms with their environment. Ecology is the study of ecosystems. As such, it is concerned with the web or network of relations among organisms at different scales of organization ranging from tiny organisms to the entire biosphere. Ecology is a well established natural science and is not synonymous with environment, environmentalism, or environmental science. Like many of the natural sciences, a conceptual understanding of ecology is found in the broader details of study, including:
Ecology is distinguished from natural history, which deals primarily with the descriptive study of organisms. It is also distinct from traditional biology, which deals primarily with understanding single organisms and the general properties of life. There are many practical applications of ecology in conservation biology, wetland management, natural resource management (agriculture, forestry , fisheries), city planning (urban ecology), community health, economics, basic & applied science and it provides a conceptual framework for understanding and researching human social interaction (human ecology). GNU Free Documentation License In terms of population ecology, what are the synapsids the first vertebrates to do? Q. We're studying early vertebrates and I missed the class when we discussed synapsid population ecology. Does anyone know of anything significant about them? Asked by Christie S - Tue Oct 23 22:35:32 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for in terms of population ecology, since there weren't exactly humans around to study early synapsid population statistics... but.. The first synapsids, Archaeothyris and Clepsydrops, are included in this group, but would probably be considered more along the lines of mammalian-like reptiles. The name Synapsid is basically referring to the single fenestra (temporal) behind each eye orbit, as opposed to the "primitive" Diapsid condition of reptiles and dinos. They were the first to show heterodont dentition (differentiated teeth, e.g., molars vs. canines - compared to an alligator which just has multiple cone shaped teeth). But the early ones still had multiple lower jaw bones (not just the dentary)… [cont.] Answered by nixity - Wed Oct 24 08:02:31 2007 What is a "top-down impact" in terms of ecology? Q. Im trying to figure out what a top-down impact is in an ecology class. The questions is : If urbanization causes the disappearance of top level predators. what would the top-down impact be? Asked by SRH24 - Sun Nov 30 22:43:02 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The top-down impact of that would be that the lower-level consumers would be unregulated grow in population feasting on even lower creatures until the population would grow too large or there would be a food shortage. Eventually, the system would re-establish itself as the unregulated species reached population equilibrium; this can take a long time though. Basically, it just means that a top level of consumers is wiped out, and the lower level consumers go crazy until they die. Q. I'm looking for a major other than liberal arts that includes linguistics, ecology, & politics. What major offers this? What career paths does this major lead to? I dono if that was clear or not...I'm looking for something that encompasses ALL three areas. NO people! Sheesh...I want ONE major that has all three of these elements, *NOT* "bits & pieces" from other degrees. Asked by Ain't no fakers. They who? - Thu Jun 4 00:46:40 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Most political science degrees I have seen allow for a great deal of electives, and I could recommend you to pursue them in ecology and perhaps obtain a separate minor in linguistics or take electives in linguistics and minor in ecology. When I pursued my BA (in Poli Sci), I took 3 social work classes and 2 religious history classes, which were of my personal interest, and I got my BA in 3 years with a specialization in International Relations. I was three classes from a minor in Theater, but I opted not to take Theater Tech because it simply did not interest me.
