A cultivar is a cultivated variety of a plant that has been deliberately selected for specific desirable characteristics (such as the colour and form of the flower, yield of the crop, disease resistance, etc.). When propagated correctly, the plants of a particular cultivar retain their special characteristics.

The naming of cultivars is an important aspect of cultivated plant taxonomy, and the correct naming of a cultivar is prescribed by the Rules and Recommendations of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (the ICNCP, commonly known as the Cultivated Plant Code). A cultivar is given a cultivar name, which is a Latin botanical name followed by a cultivar epithet, mostly in a vernacular language. For example, the full cultivar name of the King Edward potato is Solanum tuberosum 'King Edward'. The 'King Edward' part of the name is the cultivar epithet which, according to the Rules of the Cultivated Plant Code, is bounded by single quotation marks.

Cultivars make up a major part of Liberty Hyde Bailey's broader grouping, the cultigen, which is defined as a plant whose origin or selection is primarily due to intentional human activity. The word cultivar was coined by Liberty Hyde Bailey and it is generally regarded as a portmanteau of "cultivated" and "variety", but could also be derived from "cultigen" and "variety".

A cultivar is not the same as a botanical variety, and there are differences in the rules for the formation and use of the names of botanical varieties and cultivars. In recent times the naming of cultivars has been complicated by the use of statutary Plant Patents and Plant Breeders' Rights.

Q. The introgression of exotic ('wild') genetic material into cultivars often causes problems like linkage drag or unfavorable epistatic effects. Which strategy do you know to minimize these negative effects

A. Keep cultivars away from wild material; exclude wild genetic material, through making cv sterile, or selfing, or phenologically distinct (flowering earlier or later), or by bagging flowers and hand-pollinating. Or swamp wild material with cultvar material, although that's an ecologically terrible idea.

Japanese maple (coral-bark variety) problem...?
Q. I have a A. palmatum coral-bark maple, which is producing funky, wrinkled new leaves. I have several other cultivars of japanese maples, and none of them are doing this. The tree is in well-drained, fertile soil and was fertilized at the beginning of the growing season. It's still a small tree- not more than approx. 3.5 feet tall. It was transplanted to a different location about 4 months ago. There are no signs of insect or parasite infection of any sort- just the funky new leaf growth. Has anyone had this problem before? If so, did the problem rectify itself after the tree dropped its leaves for the winter? Any ideas whatsoever? Ah- yes, it is possible that a pesticide got to it. Will it recover (by next growing season) if the… [cont.]

A. Yes, I have seen this on other ornamentals and it was due to pesticide drift. Has anyone used a pesticide recently near this tree? 2,4-D esters are nortorious for producing this kind of damage, especially when temperatures exceed 85 degrees. In the heat they can quickly vaporize and drift onto non-targeted ornamrntal plantings. Yes, the new growth next season should be just fine.
