Q. An object with a mass of 2 tonnes is lifted with a simple screw jack which requires an effort of 250N. If, in lifting the object, a distance of 150MM is moved vertically, and the operator turns the jack handle through a distance of 20,000MM calculate: a) The mechanical advantage. b) The velocity ratio c) The efficiency Thanks in advance for any help. Asked by Jamamamamam - Thu Jun 18 10:10:22 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The mechanical advantage (MA) is the output force (load) divided by the input force (effort). The velocity ratio (VR) is the ratio speed of effort moving / speed of load moving. Since this usually takes the same amount of time, it can be expressed as distance moved by effort / distance moved by load. The efficiency is the ratio MA / VR. Output force = m * g = 2000 * 10 = 2000N Input force = 250N so MA = 2000 / 250 = 8. Distance moved by effort = 20m Distance moved by load = 0.15m so VR = 20 / .15 = 133.33... and efficiency = 8 * .15 / 20 = 0.06 This does not look much much, but screw jacks aren't particularly efficient machines anyway. Q. I'm a mechanical engineer working on my Masters Degree. I work in the medical industry and 98%of my work in project management. I truly love mechanical engineering and the basic science behind it but I never get to use it. Can anyone recommend industries in which mechanical engineers actually get to do engineering work as their primary activity? Asked by cbarfield73 - Mon Dec 8 21:33:51 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I work in the steel manufacturing industry as a process improvement engineer and use statistics solve problems... we ME's are usually found in manufacturing such as automotive, industrial, energy, food, consumer products, even biomedical... look on Monster.com to get a flavor of what ME's are being asked to do. However, understand that there will always be project management and administrative tasks no matter where you work.
