Plant pathology (also phytopathology) is the scientific study of plant diseases caused by pathogens (infectious diseases) and environmental conditions (physiological factors). Organisms that cause infectious disease include fungi, oomycetes, bacteria, viruses, viroids, virus-like organisms, phytoplasmas, protozoa, nematodes and parasitic plants. Not included are insects, mites, vertebrate or other pests that affect plant health by consumption of plant tissues. Plant pathology also involves the study of pathogen identification, disease etiology, disease cycles, economic impact, plant disease epidemiology, plant disease resistance, how plant diseases affect humans and animals, pathosystem genetics, and management of plant diseases. The "Disease triangle" is a central concept of plant pathology . It is based on the principle that infectious diseases develop, or do not develop, based on three-way interactions between the host, the pathogen, and environmental conditions. Q. what are the importance of plant pathology? Asked by rootman - Wed Nov 11 05:59:29 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I am a plant pathologist for a primary industries government department in Australia. My role is extremely important as I am researching better techniques for coping with plant pathogens in the agriculture sector so that yields are increased and chemicals are used in the most effective, sustainable fashion. Sometimes my research reduces the need for some chemicals altogether. I am one of the people responsible for identifying new plant diseases that might have come from overseas and working on ways to eradicate the disease. I also work closely with and advise biosecurity experts on the best ways to reduce the risk of new plant diseases entering the country. Plant viruses, like all other viruses, are obligate intracellular parasites that do not have the molecular machinery to replicate without the host. The plant viruses are defined as viruses pathogenic to higher plants. While this article does not intend to list all plant viruses, it discusses some important viruses as well as their uses in plant molecular biology. Most of the virus types that have been discovered infecting plants are single-stranded RNA viruses, and have rod-shaped capsids with protein units arranged in a spiral. One novel characteristic of Plant viruses is that some of the viruses, instead of having a segmented genome packaged into the same particle as happens in animal viruses, some of the plant virus species are… [cont.] Answered by ~tn~ - Tue Apr 25 11:30:04 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Plant pathology" |
